2022 Summer Reading Program
Join Miss Judy each week for a new ocean-themed, fun-filled event! We can’t wait for you to meet these incredible performers and special guests. Programming is planned for K-5th graders along with a caregiver. Children under 8 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Boat Building with Moana: Wednesday, June 8th • 1:30 PM @ Iron Clad Have you ever been curious about what it would be like to live near the sea? Join Miss Judy and Moana herself at the Iron Clad as they explore some things about sea-faring cultures like Moana’s Polynesian origins! We’ll have storytelling, ocean trivia, a ‘wayfinding’ lesson, and a hands-on boat-building portion. Near the end of the program, Moana will be available to families who would like to meet her!
Milford Nature Center: Wednesday, June 15th • 1:30 PM @ Iron Clad Our local and beloved Milford Nature Center will be talking about all things aquatic! They’ll bring live animals and underwater artifacts like fossils for kids to explore, ask questions, and learn about the life that thrives in a wonderful and wet world.
Kansas STARBASE: Wednesday, June 22nd • 1:30 PM @ Iron Clad Brenda Page will join us from Kansas STARBASE, an effective STEAM youth program implementing interactive learning activities in local classrooms. Join Brenda as 3-5th graders explore engineering principles to make wind boats! Miss Judy will be leading a similar activity geared toward K-2 kids.
Brian Wendling Juggler & Performer: Wednesday, June 29th • 1:30 PM @ Iron Clad Brian Wendling is a high-energy performer bringing decades of experience in bringing juggling and fun to families everywhere! He’s skilled, funny, and READY TO JUGGLE UNDERWATER?? Come see the best juggler in Kansas City!
Alan Cunningham Musical Concert Finale: Wednesday, July 6th • 1:30 PM @ Iron Clad Alan is a kids’ musician, songwriter, and storyteller. Come dance, sing, and laugh as we bring an end to another wonderful summer reading program! The winner of the Scavenger Hunt Grand Prize will be announced at this event
Join us for outdoor Storytime in City Park, near the bandstand. This year’s theme is “Oceans of Possibilities” and will feature tons of underwater fun! We’ll have a different local guest each week along with fun stories, movement songs, rhymes, and general silliness! We’ll also have fun weekly giveaways like books or toys to encourage reading growth in kids. Come to hear stories, visit with the therapy dogs, or connect with other local families!

Movie Nights: Tuesday, June 7th & Tuesday June 14th • 5-7 PM @ Wamego Public Library YA Room Join Ms. Nisha for an evening of fun and free popcorn! Water Bottle Marbling: Wednesday, June 8th • 1:30 PM @ Wamego Public Library Storytime Room Come and make your own customized marble sports water bottle in the Storytime Room with Ms. Nisha! There will be ocean-themed snacks available, and you can take your water bottle home when it’s dry!
Clothing Painting: Wednesday, June 15th • 1:30 PM @ Wamego Public Library Storytime Room Come and have fun painting clothing and bags with Ms. Nisha in the Storytime Room! There will be totes and T-shirts available, but feel free to bring in other clothes you want to paint! There will be ocean-themed snacks, and you keep your painted items when they’re done! (They will spend time drying at the library, but we will notify patrons when they can be brought home!) Registration is required!
Escape Room: Wednesday, June 22nd • 1:30 PM @ Wamego Public Library Storytime Room You walk out of your house one morning to discover a group of seagulls are lost at your doorstep! It’s up to you to help them to get home before the sun goes down! This is a group activity where you will be given puzzles and clues, and a scavenger hunt list to follow, with a prize waiting for you at the end! This will begin in the Storytime room, and the hunt for clues will take you all over the library!
Mystery Writing Workshop led by Author Steven J. Kolbe: Friday, June 24th • 10:30AM @ Wamego Senior and Community Center Do you have an idea for a mystery book? Do you have a manuscript lying in your bottom drawer? Is there an intricate plot bouncing around in your head? If any of this is true, then we have great news for you! Come meet and learn from local Kansas mystery author Steven J. Kolbe and discover how to write a killer book! All individuals 14+ are welcome!
VR Shark Experience and Trivia: Wednesday, June 29th • 1:30 PM @ Wamego Public Library Storytime Room If you have a phone, bring it to this event! We will have individual Google Cardboard Goggles for patrons in the Storytime Room, where we will have a VR Shark experience! (Options for the type of experience will be given.) Patrons without their own phone will take turns with Ms. Nisha’s phone. Following this, we will have a shark Kahoot quiz, with prizes for the top three shark experts! There will be yummy snacks, and each patron gets to keep their VR headset when they’re done!
Percy Jackson Day: Wednesday, July 6th • 1:30 PM @ Wamego Public Library Storytime Room. Will end at the Wamego City Park. Wear clothes that are comfortable to run in, and close-toed shoes! Welcome to the preparations for Camp Half-Blood. Each camper will receive a binder of activities to complete, with some additional goodies thrown in! Following our indoor activities, we will walk to the park to play capture the flag, and eat yummy snow cones!

Adult Craft Class, Advanced Cricut: Thursday, June 8th • 5:30pm @ Wamego Public Library Join Charlene to complete a project using the Cricut. This session will be making a round wooden door sign. All supplies will be provided. Registration is required and space is limited to 15 participants. Watch for a sample at the library when summer reading begins!
Kansas Legends and Folk Tales by Jim Hoy (a Humanities Kansas Speakers Bureau Event): Tuesday, June 14th • 10:30am @ Wamego Senior and Community Center Kansas is a place of big skies and tall tales, and big exaggerated narratives like these help us understand the character of our state and its people. This talk will explore some of Kansas’s most outlandish legends and folktales and help audiences decipher between a myth (folk religion), legend (folk history), and tale (folk literature). Presented by Jim Hoy, Humanities Kansas Speakers Bureau. Jim is a folklorist who works with the Center for Great Plains Studies at Emporia State University.

Trivia Night: Thursday, June 23rd • 6:00pm @ Columbian Theatre Join us for a fun-filled evening of Trivia at the Columbian Theatre! Round up a team of up to 8 of your friends as we test your knowledge of all things trivia related. To register you will need only the team contact name and email. Entry fee is $5 per person (cash encouraged) payable at the door. CASH prizes for the top 3 teams.
Mystery Writing Workshop for Adults and Teens with author Steven J. Kolbe: Friday, June 24th • 10:30am @ Wamego Senior and Community Center Do you have an idea for a mystery book? Do you have a manuscript in the bottom drawer? Or have you already published a book and want inspiration? This is your chance to meet and learn from local Kansas mystery author Steven J. Kolbe. No experience necessary. Bring your ideas and be ready to write! This free class is open to any one 14 and up.

Star Gazing: Friday, July 29th • 8:30pm @ Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie (for directions call or email the library: 785-456-9181 or email@example.com) NASA Space Ambassador Hallie Hatfield will be bringing her telescopes to Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie for an evening of observing Saturn, a sliver of the moon and if we are lucky a few meteor showers! All ages welcome! Bring your blanket and lawn chair. Telescopes will be provided, but feel to bring one if you have one.
